DIRECTED ENERGY PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY

Beam Control Conference 2006
20-24 March 2006 Monterey, California

Beam control aspects of High Energy Lasers (HEL) are becoming critical to system operations as several Directed Energy (DE) systems are entering the formal development and acquisition process. Therefore

the need for communication of concepts and ideas in this active field is vitally important. Accordingly, DEPS instituted a Beam Control Conference to accommodate the need for communication of beam control information.

The Beam Control Conference was held as part of the Directed Energy Systems Symposium and was conducted in parallel with the Directed Energy Modeling and Simulation Conference, the Employment of Directed Energy Weapons Conference, and the High Energy Laser Lethality Conference. Although there were some joint technical sessions between the conferences, each conference in the Symposium was conducted separately and each conference published their proceedings. The final detailed Symposium Program is available for download.

The scope of the Beam Control Conference encompassed:

  • Beam control designs and issues for specific HEL systems, to include ABL, ATL, THEL, relay mirrors
  • Innovative beam control concepts and alorithms for atmospheric compensation, jitter control, aero-optics and thermal blooming mitigation
  • Acquisition, tracking, and aimpoint maintenance algorithms for both strategic and tactical targets
  • Relay mirror upling concepts to include non-linear and other advanced techniques
  • Lightweight technologeis to include mirrors, gimbals, and other components of beam control systems
  • Other innovative hardware concepts for beam reshaping, aperture sharing elements, optical windows, fast steering and deformable mirrors
  • Concepts for integration and test of HEL systems
  • Innovative or advanced beam control sensors and their respective algorithms
  • Fiber laser and phased array beam control
  • Government, academic, and industry viewpoints encouraged
