DIRECTED ENERGY
PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY
Sixth Annual Directed Energy Symposium |
20-24 October 2003 |
Albuquerque, New Mexico | |
|
|
The Sixth Annual Directed Energy
Symposium brought together researchers, managers, and policy makers from government offices,
DoD, DoE, and other national laboratories, program offices, the intelligence community, industry,
universities, and other scientific & engineering institutions for discussions of current programs,
technology efforts, and the future of Directed Energy. This annual Symposium provides a forum for the
exchange of technical information in fields related to the development, testing, and fielding of
High Energy Laser (HEL) and High Power Microwave (HPM) systems.
Best Paper Awards
The Best Paper Award is made annually by the Directed Energy Professional Society (DEPS) at each
Annual Directed Energy Symposium. The Award is based on technical quality, presentation, and
importance to the future of Directed Energy, as judged by a technical panel of experts selected
by DEPS as part of the Symposium Organizing Committee. The awards included a tabletop trophy and a
check for $500, provided by Brashear LP, a DEPS sponsor.
The best paper awards for this year are:
Best HEL Paper
Phillip Sprangle, for his presentation "Atmospheric Propagation of Ultrashort Laser Pulses."
Best HPM Paper
C E Oberly, for his presentation "Revolutionary New Prime Power Generator for DEW."
Best Student Paper
Patrick Kee, for "High Temperature Superconducting Generators for DEW Systems."
